Meet Me in Copenhagen

Meet me in Nyhavn in the morning. We’ll grab a coffee and a kanelsnegl for breakfast as the sun kisses the colours on the townhouses you love so much. We’ll sit for a few minutes by the water and watch the locals ride past on their bicycles.

I know you want to find The Little Mermaid, so let’s follow the cobbled street through the Palace Courtyard and head to the star-shaped Kastellet. We can follow the green glint of Frederik’s Kirke and wave to the palace guards.

We’ll stop at Royal Gravering and pick up our favourite little Maileg Mus for the collection back home. Perhaps a ballerina Big Sister for a night at the theatre?

Past St Alban’s Church, we’ll follow the water’s edge to our Little Mermaid. She is hiding amongst the tourists, resting on a rock in the water. She is as much curious about us as we are of her, a simple and unassuming symbol of Copenhagen. A dainty portrait of sophistication and innocence. Is it worth the walk out here? For the smile on your face: Absolutely.

There are more castles to discover and gardens to explore. Fairytales live amongst contemporary museums and magnificent displays of street art. The city is built for wandering! Feel the light on your cheeks, the wind in your hair. Follow the cobbled streets and sneaky laneways. Are you hungry? The streets of Copenhagen are peppered with food carts, including the best hot dogs you will ever taste anywhere. Don’t deny it; you know it’s true. Eat while we window shop through Strøget. It’s hard to choose the ultimate souvenir for our visit, but I’m sure licorice fudge is on the list somewhere.

As dusk falls, we can follow the lights and laughter all the way to Tivoli Gardens. Dance with me through the park, with childhood dreams and happy memories. The rides dazzle bright against the night sky, shining like smiling eyes.

Copenhagen is our city to enjoy. Meet me there and make memories.
